What is Reflexology?

photo 5Reflexology is a non-intrusive complementary health therapy. It is based on the theory that different points, known as reflexes, which are on the feet, lower leg, hands, face or ears correspond with different areas of the body. It has been used as an effective healing tool for over 5,000 years and has experienced an increase in interest as the western world looks for treatments which work alongside and in harmony with conventional medicine.

In Reflexology we stimulate different parts of the body through the reflexes and meridians, which are energy points, by applying pressure in a systematic manner with the thumbs and sometimes fingers. Imbalances of the body can be seen in these reflexes. They may sometimes feel gritty, tender or bruised. These areas are gently worked to alleviate the imbalance. Reflexologists aim to stimulate the whole body through these reflexes and act as a catalyst in helping the body to heal itself.

Reflexology is a fantastic treatment which may give the following benefits

  • Deep relaxation of the body and mind.
  • Pain relief
  • Improves circulation of blood
  • Stimulates the lymphatic system to reduce bloating and excess fluid, and reduces the body’s toxic load
  • Balances hormone levels
  • Boosts the immune system – stimulates the body’s own healing system
  • Stress relief
  • Boosts energy levels
  • Aids recovery after injury or surgery

Reflexology is not a substitute for contemporary medicine and you should always consult with a suitably qualified healthcare practitioner for advice about the treatment of serious or life threatening conditions.’
